Australian Boulder Opals

Boulder Opals are one of nature's great treasures (and one of our greatest passions!)

Formed over thousands of years in the ironstone and sandstone boulders of outback Queensland, these natural opals develop in the crevices and fractures of their host rock, creating a stone unlike any other. When mined, the opal remains attached to its ironstone backing, which adds depth and grounds the stone's vivid colour play in something raw and earthy.

What makes Queensland Boulder Opals so special to us is where they come from. Most of the world's Boulder Opals are mined in a stretch of country running from the New South Wales border up through to Northern Queensland — over 1,000km of opal country. Many of these mining operations are small, family-run businesses, and we work directly with some of these miners to hand-select the stones that come into our workshop.

Because of the way they form, no two Boulder Opals are alike. They vary in size, shape, and colour, and each stone's pattern is completely its own.

Once a stone becomes a piece of jewellery, that combination of gem and design will never exist again anywhere in the world. That's what we love most about working with them — and what we hope you feel when you wear one.
