Using your own gemstones in custom jewellery

Can I use my own gemstones in custom jewellery?

In short, yes, you absolutely can use your own gems in custom jewellery!

Whether it's a simple ring design that lets the gemstone shine, or an intricately detailed pendant, there are many ways to incorporate your gemstone into a piece of jewellery that captures the original beauty of the stone blended with your style and fine craftsmanship.

Most gems can be used in jewellery, however there are some like talc, gypsum, and fluorite that are too soft or fragile to withstand daily wear. Others, such as realgar, orpiment, or cinnabar, may be toxic or unstable, making them unsuitable and potentially hazardous for use in jewellery.

Durable gemstones like diamonds, sapphires, rubies, and spinels are ideal for everyday jewellery due to their hardness and resistance to scratching. Many other stones, such as opals, topaz, garnet, and amethyst, also make excellent choices when properly set and cared for.

If you're unsure whether your gem is suitable for jewellery, you can always come by and chat with our jewellery to see what's possible.

Also important to note, when having your gemstones made into jewellery, it's vital to ensure you're going to a reputable jeweller to ensure high quality jewellery.

Why it’s great to use your gemstones in custom jewellery

  1. It's another element of customisation - you've personally chosen the gem.
  2. You add to the story behind the jewellery piece -  whether it's a gem from an old piece of jewellery, gem acquired while traveling, family heirloom, gem you've been holding onto, etc. You build on the story behind the gemstone with a jewellery design to reflect that.
  3. You get to see and be involved in the whole process - from falling in love with a gem, to falling in love with it all over again in a jewellery design. You have your input into every part of the design.

If you have a gemstone you'd love to become your your next favourite piece of jewellery, bring it along and we can discuss your vision with you or brainstorm designs together if you don't know where to start designing your custom jewellery.
